Parkland Corp., a Calgary-based fuel distributor and marketer, has temporarily shut down fuel processing at its Burnaby, B.C. refinery. The shutdown comes after the company encountered an issue while trying to restart processing operations following a pause due to extreme cold weather in the area. According to an advisory to area residents, the issue occurred in one of the refinery units and may result in elevated levels of smoke, odors, and particulate matter coming from the refinery. Parkland Corp. expects the refinery to remain shut down for approximately four weeks.

During the shutdown, the company has increased imports of fuel into its on-site terminal to ensure the reliability of fuel supply in the Lower Mainland and on Vancouver Island. Parkland’s Burnaby refinery primarily processes gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel. The refinery has a processing capacity of about 55,000 barrels per day.

The shutdown comes as a result of a stinky startup, which occurred after the company paused its processing operations earlier this month due to extreme cold weather in B.C. The company encountered an issue on January 21 when trying to restart processing, leading to the decision to temporarily shut down the refinery. The exact nature of the issue and the impact on Parkland’s operations have not been disclosed.

Parkland Corp. is an independent supplier of fuel, petroleum products, and convenience store items. The company operates through various segments, including Canada Retail, Canada Commercial, USA, and Supply. It owns and operates a network of retail gasoline stations, cardlock locations, and commercial fuelling facilities.

The temporary shutdown of its Burnaby refinery is expected to have implications on Parkland Corp.’s operations and fuel supply. The four-week shutdown period could impact the company’s financial performance and may result in increased dependence on fuel imports during this time.
